There is no better way to start a (holiday) day in the Algarve than by watching the sunrise. From various viewpoints and beaches in the Algarve you have a beautiful view of the rising sun as it appears on the horizon above the water surface. What makes it extra serene is that the sunrise is considerably quieter in terms of crowds than the sunset. The best place to see the sun rise in the Algarve is from the water, but from the many high rocks and cliffs that the Algarve is known for, it is also absolutely worth setting the alarm clock early!
These are the top 3 best places to watch the sunrise in the Algarve:
1. The Ponta da Piedade
Just outside the charming Lagos lies the beautiful Ponta da Piedade. This nature reserve is known for the typical golden sandstone cliffs that the Algarve is famous for and that you see depicted on postcards. It is one of natures pieces of art that weather and wind have worked on for centuries.
From the various viewpoints along the boardwalks you can look out over the south coast and in the east you can slowly see the golden sun rise in the morning.
Make the sunrise extra special by booking a stand-up paddleboard excursion during sunrise. Since this is in the early hours of the day, there are hardly any other boats and there is often no wind in the morning!

2. Fortaleza de Sagres
In the far southwest of the Algarve lies the sleepy village of Sagres. Besides being known as a surfing spot, it is also home to an impressive old fortress: The Fortaleza de Sagres. Although it is not open before sunrise, from the cliffs there you have a phenomenal view over the ocean as the sun rises and the world wakes up.
3. Foia viewpoint near Monchique
A short 15 minute drive from Monchique towards the west on the N266-3, brings you to the Miradouro da Fóia (viewpoint of the Fóia mountain). From the top you have a beautiful view over the area and you can enjoy a drink at the little pop-up cafe Alecrim just below the parking lot. It is a popular spot for sunset, but you will probably be almost alone during a sunrise!
