A rainy, windy, cloudy or cold day in the Algarve doesn’t have to mean your holiday is ruined. Luckily, there are plenty of fun things to do, as long as you know where to go. Although most of the activities in the Algarve are outdoors, there are still some fun things to do on days when it’s raining or windy. Many of them are also suitable for children! Here are 15 ideas for bad weather activities in the Algarve:

1. Visit a vineyard for a wine tasting. The Algarve is known for its beautiful wine, so why not visit a wine tasting if the weather is bad? There are numerous wine tastings in the Algarve where you can have a fun experience and discover new wines. Even if the weather is not ideal for walking among the vines, the tasting and tour of the barrels and machinery will of course take place indoors. 2. Take shelter underground in the salt mine near Loulé . Shelter from the bad weather in the 230-metre-deep salt mine of Tech Salt just outside Loulé. This still-in-use salt mine consists of a huge network of tunnels where the company extracts salt for brine, licks for animals and products such as salt stone lamps. The tour starts off well, with a descent straight down into a metal cage. A fun and exciting activity for young and old!
   
   
3. Visit the olive factory in Tavira. A tasty indoor activity is to visit the Hélder Madeira olive factory in Tavira. Here you can see how olives are processed and seasoned after being picked before they can be eaten. Did you know that olives cannot be eaten straight from the tree?
4. Explore one of the old-fashioned villages or towns in the Algarve. If it’s too cold to lie on the beach, visit one of the many historical places the Algarve has to offer for a cultural day out! In places like Silves, Lagos, Tavira of Ferragudo you can wander on foot in the maze of streets full of old-fashioned architecture and hidden cafes & handicraft shops. Also many of these places know beautiful castles, churches, museums and cathedrals to visit.
5. Visit an indoor water park or indoor pool . If the weather is really too bad to go to the beach, you can always go to an indoor water park. AquaShow, which can be found between Albufeira and Faro, is a large outdoor and indoor water park in the Algarve where you can enjoy a fun day full of water games and slides. In addition, many hotels and resorts in the Algarve have an indoor pool, so you may not even need to drive! Not staying in such luxurious accommodation? Some hotels and resorts will let you use the pool for a small fee, such as the Spa Satsanga in Lagos. Here they have a swimming pool, a hot tub, sauna and steam bath. For non-guests the entrance fee is €20.00 plus €3.00 to purchase a swimming cap. Give this or any other resort a call and ask if there is room! I must admit that I sometimes secretly look forward to a rainy day, so that I can relax for a few hours in the heated indoor pool.

6. Visit an (interactive) museum or gallery. If the weather is not cooperating, a museum or gallery is a great way to stay indoors and still have something to do. There are several museums and galleries in the Algarve that you can visit,   such as:
   • Portimao Museum: a nice museum in Portimão where you can learn more about the rich history of the sardine industry in the Algarve.
   • Science Museum in Lagos: an interactive science museum in Lagos for young and old.
   • Faro Museum: a modest archaeological museum in a monumental building in Faro.
   • Algarve Life Sciences Center: a nice little museum in Faro, ideal for families with children. There are some aquariums, interactive science objects and an open aquarium where you can hold sea creatures.
   • 3D Fun Art Museum Portimão. In this funny 3D museum in Portimão you can take fun pictures of your company in special poses and situations. Fun for children from about 10 years old.
   • Loulé Municipal Museum. The Loulé Museum/Castle offers a glimpse into the history of the area with archaeological finds and an exhibition on the history of traditional Algarve cuisine.

7. Go shopping in one of the shopping malls. Even if it’s raining, that doesn’t mean you can’t shop for souvenirs, clothes or Portuguese spices. There are plenty of shopping malls and shops in the Algarve where you can find great souvenirs or gifts for the folks back home. Here are some of the shopping malls in the Algarve:
   • Forum Algarve Faro: This shopping centre in Faro is the largest in the Algarve and offers over 150 shops including international brands such as Zara, Mango and H&M as well as local shops such as Continente, Primark and El Corte Inglés.    • Aqua Portimão: This shopping centre in Portimão is located on the seafront and offers over 80 shops, including brands such as Massimo Dutti, Bershka and Oysho, as well as local shops such as Worten and Jumbo. There is also a large food court with a wide range of international dishes.

   • Algarve Shopping Guia: This shopping centre in Guia offers over 150 shops, including international brands such as Nike, Adidas and Calvin Klein, as well as local shops such as Pingo Doce and Decathlon. 8. Go to a cinema. In most places in the Algarve you will find a cinema showing an international film. The subtitles will be in Portuguese, but if you understand a little English you can easily go to the latest Marvel film and while away a few hours with a mouth full of popcorn.
9. Escape from an escape room. Also in the Algarve you will find a selection of fun interactive Escape Rooms where you have to try to escape within an hour by solving puzzles. 11. Have an extensive lunch in a restaurant or cafe. If the weather is really too bad to be outside, a restaurant or cafe is a relaxing place to look out the window at the drizzly weather while enjoying a snack and a drink. The Algarve has
    numerous nice restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner. Are you a digital nomad? Then take your laptop with you and work from a café for a day.
12. Visit a spa or wellness centre. If the weather is really bad, a visit to a spa or wellness centre might be just what you need to unwind. There are numerous spas and wellness centres in the Algarve where you can enjoy a massage, sauna or other relaxing treatment. In Albufeira, the Bali Spa a must, in Portimão the Swan Day Spa and near Lagos the Spa Satsanga.
13. Go see big waves on the west coast. If the wind is blowing hard and it is not nice to lie in the sun, go on a little road trip to the west coast of the Algarve. As soon as there is a lot of wind from the west due to a passing storm, the waves are often very impressive on the west coast, which can provide quite a spectacle. Moreover, there is a chance that it will be dry there, because the clouds often blow over quickly from the west coast towards the interior.

14. Take a cooking class . If you love cooking and want to get to know Algarvean cuisine, a cooking class might be just what you’re looking for. There are a number of cooking classes in the Algarve where you can learn how to make traditional Algarvean dishes such as the delicious Pastel de Nata. This and other workshops takes place almost every other day in Lagos.
15. Take a tour of a cork factory. The Algarve’s climate and soil are ideal for cork trees. The bark of these trees is used to make all sorts of products, from slippers to bags (and of course wine corks). Discover how cork is processed into the final product at a real cork factory near Olhão.
