Dolphin watching in the Algarve – Wild dolphin boat trips
Dolphin watching in the Algarve – Best boat trips to spot wild dolphins
The Algarve is one of the few places on earth where you have a great chance of spotting wild dolphins in the wild every day. See these magnificent animals during a dolphin watching tour from a catamaran or speedboat while they play, hunt or are passing through in their natural habitat. The experienced captains know exactly where to find them and will tell you all about their behaviour, habits and diet.
Dolphin watching boat trips depart from most locations including Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos and Faro, of course when sea conditions permit. In the summer the sea is very calm, so you don’t have to worry if you get seasick easily! All boat trips are suitable for all ages, so children and adults are also welcome on board.
💡 Tips for booking a dolphin tour (click)
A dolphin tour is a great water activity, suitable for young and old. Get the most out of your excursion with the following tips:
🐬Do you get seasick easily? Larger boats are more stable in the water and suffer less from swell. I prefer a catamaran because it rocks much less than a boat with a single hull.
🐬 Do you want to visit other sights during the dolphin tour? There are a number of tours that, in addition to searching for dolphins, also sail past the Ponta de Piedade or the Benagil cave. This way you kill two birds with one stone!
🐬 Do you have binoculars? Bring them! It is not always possible to sail very close to the dolphins. With binoculars you can spot them earlier and see them from closer.
🐬 Facts and information about wild dolphins in the Algarve (click)
Dolphins are a frequent visitor to the Algarve coast. Thanks to its rich and diverse marine life, this part of Portugal offers ideal conditions for several species of dolphins. These include the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), and sometimes the pilot whale (Globicephala melas).
Dolphins can be seen all year round, but the peak season is between April and October. Dolphins are very social animals and often live in groups or pods. They are known for their playful behavior, and it is not uncommon to see them jumping and spinning in the waves.
They are also extremely intelligent, using complex sounds to communicate, hunt and orient themselves in the water using echolocation.
I myself have seen dolphins swimming by the coast of the Algarve a few times while surfing. Sometimes they come very close! While flying my drone at Praia do Cordoama, I ‘accidentally’ captured them on camera. (I only saw it afterwards on the images!)

Dolphin watching boat trips from Albufeira
From Albufeira, many dolphin spotting tours are combined with a visit to the impressive Benagil cave. This way, you experience two highlights of your trip in one adventure. Most boat trips in Albufeira depart from the Marina, which is easily accessible on foot from the center. The harbor also has many types of restaurants where you can go if you get hungry after your water adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions about dolphin watching boat trips in the Algarve
What are the chances of seeing wild dolphins in the Algarve?
The experienced captains know where the dolphins regularly pass by, which makes the chance that you will see them very high. Most companies offer a 90-95% guarantee that you will encounter wild dolphins. But of course they are still wild animals, so it is possible that you will unfortunately miss them. To help each other, the skippers who are at sea are in contact with each other to let each other know where the dolphins are at that moment.
When can you spot dolphins in the Algarve?
The best time to spot wild dolphins off the Algarve coast is in spring and summer. In addition, the sea is often too rough to sail comfortably in autumn and it is also more difficult to spot wild dolphins. The best time to spot wild dolphins in the Algarve is between April and September. Sometimes dolphins can be seen from the coast, but to see them up close it is best to book a boat trip.
Can you swim with wild dolphins in the Algarve?
Since they are wild dolphins, it is not allowed to swim with them. Furthermore, they are not always interested in people and can swim away if you jump into the water.
If you want a close-up experience with dolphins, the best place to go is from Zoomarine.
What should I bring on a dolphin boat tour in the Algarve?
For all boat trips, especially in summer, it is advisable to bring sunscreen, a cap and a bottle of water. In addition, of course, your camera and if you have them: binoculars!
How rough is the sea in the Algarve?
If you come in the summer, you will not be bothered by waves and swell. Most days the sea is wonderfully clear blue and flat. This way you do not have to worry about potentially getting seasick. The best place to spot dolphins in Portugal is off the coast of the Algarve region. Wild dolphins pass by here all year round, which is why boat trips leave daily from various coastal towns. The advantage of the southern coast of Portugal is that the sea here is very calm, so you will not be bothered by waves and swell while you are looking for wild dolphins.
