Vila do Bispo is a small village located next to the west coast of the Portuguese Algarve. You will pass through it on your way to sleepy Sagres and if you are doing a road trip along the coast. It is here where the N125 provincial road ends and continues as the N268 north and south.
In Vila do Bispo it seems as if time has stood still. There are no high-rise buildings and although there is not much to see in the centre itself, there are several impressive beaches a stone’s throw away and you can do some shopping before driving up towards Aljezur or down towards Sagres. Culinary-wise you are in the right place here, because the prices in the restaurants and cafes are still ‘Portuguese’ and therefore very affordable. The prices of accommodation are also a lot lower here than along the south coast.
As a fanatic surfer, I often pass by Vila do Bispo when I drive towards the west coast to find some waves. Every now and then I stop for a bica , pastel de nata or to do some shopping in the local market hall. On this page I share my favorite sights, activities, beaches and some tips for hotels and restaurants based on my own experiences!

Vila do Bispo top 6 sights
Despite the fact that Vila do Bispo is not a very big place, there are still a number of nice places to see in and around Vila do Bispo. These are my top 6 sights in (near) Vila do Bispo:
- Mercado Municipal de Vila do Bispo . This small market hall is where the residents of Vila do Bispo get their fresh fish, vegetables and fruit. It is open every day except Sunday from 07:00 to 17:00, but the fish stall usually closes around noon. So it is best to come in the morning to stock up on some fruit or artisanal honey.
Next to the entrance is Snack-Bar Zig-Zag . The terrace is full of locals in the morning who come to drink an espresso and eat a pastel de nata . Later in the day they serve hamburgers, omelettes and a number of fish dishes.
The address is Rua do Mercado Municipal, EM1265, 8650-421 Vila do Bpo.
- Museu de Vila do Bispo – Celeiro da História. This new museum opened in January 2024 and focuses on cultural heritage, Saint Vincent (after whom the cape and lighthouse are named) and houses excavated pottery and tools. It also delves into geology, the history of the west coast and its people.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and admission costs €5.00. The information is in Portuguese and partly in English.

- Izzys Market . This cute little cafe is a shop and bakery that offers many vegan menu options such as a vegan pastel de nata, burgers and toasties. Come in the morning when the muffins and pies de nata are hot out of the oven! Besides coffee, they also serve freshly squeezed juices and ‘why not’ sodas (a personal favorite).
The store area features locally made products such as honey, sugar-free ketchup and organic nuts and seeds.

- Trilho Ambiental do Castelejo . Leave the centre of Vila do Bispo past the market hall on the M1265 and on your way to the west coast beaches you will pass Trilho Ambiental do Castelejo , which is a beautiful walking route through the rugged west coast landscape. The unpaved car park is on the left and once you have parked the car you follow a route along forests, sculptures and in the autumn some small lakes/ponds.
There are also a number of public barbecues that the locals make grateful use of, especially at weekends. There are picnic benches around them where you can enjoy your packed lunch.

- Miradouro da Cordoama . After the Trilho Ambiental do Castelejo walk, continue on the M1265 by car until you reach a junction. Keep right uphill towards ‘Cordoama’ and then take the gravel path on the left towards the Miradouro da Cordoama viewpoint. The road is unpaved and, depending on the season, not always comfortable but the view that awaits you is worth the bumpy ride!
Park at the end and gaze from this beautiful viewpoint over the ocean and the rocks that jut out above the water.
On the left you see Praia do Castelejo, on the right Praia do Cordoama.
On a windy day, paragliders use these air currents along the rock face to gain height again. If you would like to try this yourself, meet Paraglider Nelson.
This is the exact location of the viewpoint.
- The viewpoint at the ruin above Praia da Águia . Next to the miradouro do Cordoama , this viewpoint south of Praia do Castelejo is at least as impressive and also a lot less crowded. To get there you will have to drive a bit, partly on a dirt road, but I come here a few times a year and find it worth the drive every time. Park on the verge around this intersection and then walk north. As you will see, the road gets worse and worse, so parking in time is better for your car. From here it is about a 1400 meter walk until you reach the cliff where the ruin is located.
On the left you look down on Praia da Águia, a rugged bay formed by dark cliffs and further on you look out over Praia do Castelejo and in the background Praia do Cordoama. This place is extra magical around sunset, so bring your partner and a bottle of wine.

The beaches at Vila do Bispo
Directly west of Vila do Bispo are some beautiful rugged beaches. Unlike the south coast, the cliffs here are very high and quite steep. In summer, modest waves of between 1 and 3 meters roll in, while in winter they can grow to 5 or 6 meters!
These are the beaches near Vila do Bispo:
- Praia do Castelejo. Drive out of Vila do Bispo via the M1265 and at the fork take the left road down towards Castelejo . At the end of the winding road you will first pass an unpaved parking lot and at the very end a paved one. If you arrive later in the day, I would immediately park at the unpaved parking lot as there are only a few spaces at the end. Moreover, it is only an extra 2 minutes walk and turning is difficult.
As soon as you walk onto the beach, you will probably understand why Praia do Castelejo is one of my favourite beaches. On the left and right you will see towering cliffs and at low tide you can walk all the way north to Praia do Cordoama. It is therefore a popular beach for a walk where in winter you sometimes meet no one while large waves explode violently on the rocks in fountains of water.
At the very south side the beach runs over rocks and stones and you can walk a bit inland. The large rock you see in the water on the right (I think it looks like a chameleon’s head) can be partly climbed at low tide, but make sure you are back on the beach in time or you will get wet feet.
In the summer this beach is popular with beginning surfers and you will find several surf schools. In the fall the waves are a lot bigger and the pros come with a shortboard to brave meter-high waves as soon as the wind dies down.
The beach has one restaurant, but personally I would only sit there for a drink with a view. In my opinion you can eat better (and cheaper) in Vila do Bispo itself!
- Praia da Cordoama. The second beach next to Vila do Bispo is Praia do Cordoama. At the aforementioned junction, take the right road up this time and then down the hill until you reach the parking lot. On the left is a paved parking lot, on the right an unpaved one in case the other is full.
Here too you see beautiful cliffs on both sides and at low tide you can walk along the water’s edge to Praia do Castelejo.
Praia do Cordoama is popular all year round with surfers who come for small waves of 1 to 2 meters in the summer, and at least double that in the winter.
At Bar da Praia , the only restaurant/cafe on the beach, you can have lunch and dinner, but personally I find the price/quality below average. What is convenient is the serving window at the front where you can pick up drinks at Dutch prices.
3 fun activities around Vila do Bispo
Although Vila do Bispo is not as big an activity hub as Lagos or Albufeira, there are some nice excursions you can take part in nearby. Here are my favorite activities near Vila do Bispo:
- Paragliding above the ocean and along the coast . Explore the west coast of the Algarve from an unprecedented height with a paragliding adventure. Together with an experienced instructor, you will make a tandem flight above Praia da Cordoama until you finally land on the beach.

- Coasteering excursion Just south of Vila do Bispo you can take part in a
coasteering excursion. This involves climbing and scrambling over rocks equipped with a life jacket and helmet and then jumping into the water to swim along the coast. This exciting activity is quite intense but definitely an unforgettable adventure.

- Sunset jeep tour along the west coast . Do you want to discover the west coast of the Algarve together with a local guide? Then this sunset jeep tour is recommended. The guide can tell you all about ‘his’ west coast and takes you to the most beautiful places to take pictures and enjoy the sunset.

Vila do Bispo hotel & accommodation tips
Since Vila do Bispo is not exactly a tourist hotspot, the accommodation prices are good. You can stay here relatively cheaply while the beautiful west coast and the south coast are both within easy reach. If you don’t necessarily want to stay within walking distance of the beach in a laid-back Portuguese village, then Vila do Bispo is the place to be.
These are my 3 accommodation tips for Vila do Bispo:
1. Abrigo das Nortadas
Just outside the centre of Vila do Bispo lies the cute guesthouse Abrigo das Nortadas . Thanks to its rural location and only a handful of rooms, you can completely relax in this traditionally furnished accommodation. No transport of your own? The friendly owner will take you to Vila do Bispo and back if necessary.
2. Pure Flor de Esteva
On the edge of Vila do Bispo, within walking distance of the centre, lies the white and wooden coloured guest house Pure Flor de Esteva . Choose a room with a terrace and drink a glass of wine together while the sun sets in the sea in the distance. Feeling hungry? Within a few minutes walk you are at the village square.
3. Ardmar B&B
The whole family is welcome at Ardmar B&B. The ‘family villa’ has three bedrooms, but there are also a number of double rooms for couples. The interior is modern and light and fully equipped. The centre of Vila do Bispo is within walking distance and the extensive breakfast is very well regarded.
Affordable car rental in the Algarve
The best way to discover all the beauty in the Algarve is with a rental car. By renting a car for a few days you can much more easily reach the sights and activities that are not always accessible by public transport.

3 Restaurant tips for Vila do Bispo
There aren’t many places to eat in Vila do Bispo, but fortunately they seem to opt for quality over quantity. As Vila do Bispo is on the way back from Sagres and the west coast, many people stop here for a meal before watching the sunset during high season. I would therefore recommend making a reservation in advance during the summer season and on weekends.
These are the restaurants in Vila do Bispo that I recommend:
Ribeira do Poço
In the central square of Vila do Bispo, you can’t miss the Ribeira do Poço fish restaurant . The parasols are set out during the day and there always seems to be people enjoying a fish meal. The cataplana is recommended, as are the slightly spicy prawns marinated in piri-piri.
Pisco
Pisco is a cozy restaurant where you can go in the evening for excellent (vegetarian) pizzas, tempeh or burrata. The menu changes throughout the seasons, but whatever you choose, you make the right choice. Take-away is also possible, but it is much more fun to sit down and let the friendly staff serve you.
O Cultural
At O Cultural you can’t make a wrong choice. The dishes all look fantastic and taste even better. The homemade falafel is a must, as is the shakshuka. You can also be surprised with a ‘dish of the day’ where you get a drink and coffee in addition to food for only ten euros!
