The Legend:

According to legend, the Knights of Santiago, led by D. Paio Peres Correia, consumed a drink made from sweet potatoes as a vitamin supplement before each battle. At that time, carrying weapons and armor was not an easy task. Therefore, they needed complete food. The force of the invasion and the speed with which the castle of Aljezur was taken, left the Moors astonished. The conquest took place in 1249 and the drink that, according to legend, served as the basis for the brilliant victory is nothing more and nothing less than the famous sweet potato feijoada of Aljezur.
