Fuseta (Algarve): an atmospheric fishing village on a beautiful nature park

Fuseta sights & holiday tips
Fuseta is a small fishing village in the east of the Algarve, located half an hour’s drive from Faro . It is the neighboring village of the larger Olhão and is located, like this city, on the beautiful Ria Formosa nature park. It is a popular destination for those seeking relaxation and peace, hikers, but also for sports enthusiasts who want to (learn) kitesurfing or windsurfing in the bay.
In the old centre of Fuseta you will find traditional Portuguese architecture with white walls and red-orange roofs. At the head of the village is a campsite, where campers and caravans are welcome to spend the night with the sound of the sea in the background. The nice thing about Fuseta is that everything is within walking distance. The harbour, boulevard, the centre and the beach.
As a resident of the Algarve, I regularly go out to discover new places. On this page you can read my tips for a visit to or stay in Fuseta. Think of favorite sights, activities and some tips for hotels and restaurants.

Sights in Fuseta
Fuseta is not a large town, but that adds to its charm. No high-rise buildings here, but narrow streets where the walls are beautifully tiled or whitewashed and where the locals drink a bica can be drunk in the sun on the terrace of small cafes. In and around Fuseta there are a number of nice sights to see during your visit. Most of them can be reached on foot, but for some you will have to jump in the car or on a boat (!).
Therefore, Fuseta is a nice destination for a day of culture and nature. These are some of my favorite sights in Fuseta:

- The Fuseta Quay
Not to be missed is the Fuseta Quay and waterfront. It runs from Rua Dr. Virgílio Inglês to the Borda d’Água café where the road ends and the beach begins. Along the quay you will see fishing and pleasure boats of all shapes and sizes, some of which look more like Swiss cheese than vessels. Halfway along you will pass the (back of) Parque de Campismo Fuzeta.

- The old town of Fuseta.
Fuseta is not a large town, so no matter how you look, you will eventually walk past the Praça da República , at the top of the Rua Ten. Barroso . This small square is the heart of the old town of Fuseta and because it is car-free, you can enjoy a meal in one of the many restaurants and cafés here without having to sniff exhaust fumes.

- Jardim da Fuseta.
The Jardim da Fuseta is the town’s municipal park. It’s the place where organised events take place, but even when there’s nothing going on, you can still enjoy a nice walk along the floodplains. At low tide, the ocean retreats and you can see hundreds of crabs walking or waving their arms happily (to find a mate) on the marshy bottom. On the south side of the Jardim da Fuseta, there are some fitness machines to use, should you find the motivation.

- Praia da Fuseta Ria.
Fuseta has two beaches with very similar names: Praia da Fuseta Ria and Praia da Fuseta . The first is the beach that is located at the mouth of the harbor. This can be reached on foot and is ideal for a day of sun and sea where you don’t have to take a boat. Since it is not directly on the open ocean, the water is slightly warmer and the barrier island provides shelter from the ocean waves. This makes the bay between the two beaches very popular with windsurfers, kite surfers and other water sports enthusiasts.

- Praia da Fuseta. The ‘real’ beach of Fuseta is on the barrier island that lies directly off the coast of the town. This huge sandbank gives Fuseta a bay that is very popular with water sports enthusiasts. Technically it is not an island, but some refer to this beach as Ilha da Fuseta. To get to Praia da Fuseta you will need to take a water taxi from the harbour. Be careful where you buy your tickets though, as some will charge an exorbitant price. The cheapest (that I could find) is ‘ Passeios Ria Formosa ‘, where a return ticket costs just €2.00 (compared to €10 by others).

- Ecovia walking route along the salt pans . At the southwestern tip of Fuseta a small dirt path starts along the bay and salt pans. A round trip is about two kilometers and with a bit of luck you will see flamingos here. It is not exclusively for walkers so now and then you can come across a car. The starting point can be found here .

4 fun activities in Fuseta
There are a number of fun activities to do in Fuseta. If you fancy some action and adventure after relaxing on the beach, you can go to one of the following addresses:
- Dolphin Watching Tour from Fuseta. Always wanted to see wild dolphins? From Fuseta, boat trips leave almost daily where you and the skipper will search the ocean for wild dolphins. According to the captain, the chance of finding them is around 95% thanks to their years of experience!
- Kitesurfing in Fuseta. The most exciting activity to do on a windy day is a kitesurfing lesson. Thanks to the shelter of the Ilha da Fuseta barrier island, there are hardly any waves and little current. The experienced kitesurfing instructors will teach you how to control the kite and make turns. Muscle pain & beautiful memories guaranteed. Check out ‘ Kite Culture Algarve ‘ here.
- Stand up paddleboard in Fuseta. Get on an inflatable stand-up paddleboard and paddle under your own power across the crystal clear waters of Fuseta Bay. Watch the fish swim by under the board and get off your board on the other side to explore Ilha da Fuseta. SUPs can be rented at ‘ Sup in Fuzeta ‘.
- Barrier Islands Cruise from Fuseta Discover the barrier islands off the coast of Fuseta on this half-day sailing tour . Cruise through the calm waters of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve as you explore the park’s four islands with a small group. Stop at a few islands, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife like dolphins, and enjoy a swim in the warm waters of the lagoon.

Since Fuseta is only a small town, you will mainly find small boutique hotels, apartments and cute B&Bs. It is an ideal base to explore the western Algarve such as Olhão, Faro and Tavira. Check out some of my favorite hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses below where you will undoubtedly feel at home.
These are my 3 accommodation tips for Fuseta:
Fuseta hotel tips and recommendations
1. Barco Casa Fuzeta

How cool is this? Sleeping on your own houseboat! This is possible at the quay of Fuseta and if the weather conditions are good: in the bay. A unique experience where you are slowly lulled to sleep by the swell with the sound of the sea in the background.
Restaurant tips for Fuseta
There are a number of excellent restaurants tucked away in the old town of Fuseta. Most of them have fish and seafood on the menu, but if you fancy something different, there are also excellent alternatives.
These are the restaurants and cafes in Fuseta that I recommend:
Restaurante Fuzeta Tapas do Nik

Simple but excellent tapas at a low price. You can find them at Restaurante Fuzeta Tapas do Nik. Our favorites were the courgette pieces with feta-pesto dip and the slightly spicy padron peppers with garlic & salt. For two, including drinks, we only paid twenty euros!
Affordable car rental in the Algarve
The best way to discover all the beauty in the Algarve is with a rental car. By renting a car for a few days you can much more easily reach the sights and activities that are not always accessible by public transport.
By renting a car from Luzcar, you are helping a local family business run by Portuguese entrepreneurs. This way you support the local economy and you also get top service, which is often a stark contrast to the large corporations. Luzcar is based in Lagos, but they also offer cars at the airport in Faro. This way you can pick up the car immediately upon arrival and return it at the airport upon departure.
Luzcar’s reputation speaks for itself. Almost 5 out of 5 on Google Maps.
