Armaçao de Pêra Algarve Portugal sights tips recommendations

Armação de Pêra is a fishing village located in the heart of the Algarve, about 40 minutes drive from Faro Airport. It is situated next to the mouth of a small river and directly on the Atlantic Ocean. In the past, fishing was the main industry; today the town relies mainly on the many sun seekers who come to this beautiful destination in the summer for relaxation and adventure.

Directly in front of Armação de Pêra is Praia de Armação de Pêra, a wide sandy beach with here and there cozy restaurants and cafes built against the dunes and cliffs. Near Armação there are a number of notable sights such as the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha chapel, the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos and the Benagil cave.

The brief history of Armação de Pêra

Armação de Pêra started as a small fishing village that mainly focused on tuna fishing around 1577. Unfortunately, pirates were active in this area, threatening the catch and prosperity. In 1667, a fort was built to strengthen the safety in the area. It was badly damaged during the infamous earthquake and tsunami of 1755, but was fortunately quickly repaired. In the center of Armação you will find the remains of the fort and you can walk over the remains and visit the chapel.

By 1841, Armação de Pêra had changed from a collection of huts to a village of stone houses, and there was a shift from tuna fishing to sardines. By 1885, the fishing community had grown considerably and even took on an industrial aspect with a fish canning factory.

Although its exact origins are not well documented, its connection to the sea is recognised as fundamental to the town’s history. In the 20th century, Armação de Pêra benefited from tourism and developed into one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Algarve. In addition to tourism, fishing remains an important source of income and you can still see fishing boats returning to the beach on the eastern side of the beach every morning. There, they are pulled onto the beach by tractor.

Today, Armação de Pêra is home to some 6,000 inhabitants, but this number rises to an impressive 60,000(!) during the busy summer months. The town remains focused on the sea, with fishing still playing an important role alongside the flourishing tourism.

Armação de Pêra top 6 sights

During my visit to Armação de Pêra, I experienced a mix of authentic and modern Portugal. The beautiful Praia de Armação de Pêra sandy beach with its fishermen’s huts and typical cliffs feels traditional, while a few streets away from the beach and the boulevard, towering apartments with little finishing fill the horizon. Although it doesn’t feel as overwhelming and touristy as Portimão, it’s no Carvoeiro or Luz either. Stay close to the beach and Armação is still perfect for a sun holiday with all the ingredients for a memorable adventure within walking distance. Most sights are within walking distance, but book a rental car and discover the many other highlights that can be found nearby.

These are the top 6 sights in Armação de Pêra:

1. Praia de Armação de Pêra

Praia de Armação de Pêra

Praia de Armação de Pêra is the largest beach in the town and stretches for about a kilometre and a half from the river delta in the east to Praia do Vale do Olival in the west. In high season, you can rent a sunbed with parasol on various parts of the beach, while the terraces behind it serve cocktails with the same blue colour as the sea.

It is worth walking to the east side where the fishing boats rest on the beach after being dragged onto the beach by tractor. Directly behind the fishing huts is a large parking lot and the walking path along the river begins.

On the west side you walk along the typical Algarve cliffs until the beach merges into Praia do Vale do Olival.

2. Praia do Vale do Olival

Praia do Vale do Olival, Armação de Pêra

West of Praia de Armação de Pêra Praia do Vale do Olival. It is a popular beach that is well sheltered from any north-westerly winds thanks to the high cliffs. Take the stairs up and walk above the water and discover mini beaches that can only be reached from the water.

Stop voor lunch bij Calixtos Beach Bar & Restaurant of eindig daar na een dag bakken op het strand terwijl je proost met een cocktail of sangria.

3. Ribeira de Alcantarilha walking route

Ribeira de Alcantarilha, Armação de Pêra

The Ribeira de Alcantarilha ends in the sea on the eastern side of Praia de Armação de Pêra, just past the fishermen’s huts. The mix of fresh and salt water attracts many species of birds that catch fish and build nests here. The walking route starts directly behind NANA on the Beach. At the end of 2023, the bridge in the photo was still under construction, but it is now complete and links to Praia Grande, you can now walk all the way to Praia de Gale

4. Fortaleza de Armação de Pêra

Fortaleza de Armação de Pêra

In the centre of Armação you will find the Fortaleza de Armação de Pêra. In the distant past, this fort protected the town against sinister types (pirates). At that time, the fort was many times larger, but most of the walls have since been demolished or not repaired after the earthquake in 1755. Two buildings are still standing: a chapel and next to it a building that is now used by a scouting association. From the elevation you can look out over the beach on both sides and around you will find various cafés and restaurants.

5. Igreja Matriz de Armação de Pêra

Igreja Matriz de Armação de Pêra

The Igreja Matriz de Armação de Pêra is the largest church in the city and dates from the second half of the 20th century. In the square in front of it, children play with the fountains in the summer while their parents take a look inside. An eye-catching piece of art is the beautiful painting of ‘Our Lady of Sailors’.

Af en toe worden hier concerten en optredens georganiseerd, dankzij de goede akoestiek.

6. Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha

Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha

A short ten-minute drive from Armação de Pêra, the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha chapel sits atop a narrow but high cliff. Light a candle at the altar or walk to the end of the point and look out over the ocean. It is also a popular spot for a sunrise or sunset.

Aan beiden kanten bevinden zich zandstranden ingebouwd door kliffen, maar die wel toegankelijk zijn via een trap of wandelpad.

Affordable car rental in the Algarve

The best way to discover all the beauty in the Algarve is with a rental car. By renting a car for a few days you can much more easily reach the sights and activities that are not always accessible by public transport.

By renting a car from Luzcar, you are helping a local family business run by Portuguese entrepreneurs. This way you support the local economy and you also get top service, which is often a stark contrast to the large corporations. Luzcar is based in Lagos, but they also offer cars at the airport in Faro. This way you can pick up the car immediately upon arrival and return it at the airport upon departure.

Luzcar’s reputation speaks for itself. Almost 5 out of 5 on Google Maps.
