Frequently asked questions about coasteering in the Algarve
What is coasteering?
Coasteering is a physical activity in which participants navigate along the rugged coastline of a coastal area, often through a combination of walking, climbing, jumping, swimming and sometimes even diving. It is an exciting and adventurous outdoor sport that gives you the chance to experience the coastal landscape in a unique way.
Although the exact origins of coasteering are difficult to pin down – humans have always interacted with coastal landscapes in different ways – the current concept of coasteering is generally attributed to the United Kingdom, and Wales in particular, in the late 20th century. Outdoor sports companies began promoting coasteering as an organised activity as a way to explore the natural environment in an adventurous and respectful way. It quickly became popular and has since spread to other coastal regions around the world.
What should I bring when coasteering in the Algarve?
During an organized coasteering excursion, the necessary safety equipment will be provided. Think of a helmet, life jacket and possibly gloves. You will need to bring your own swimming trunks and towel. It is also useful to bring something warm, as it can be chilly in the wind if you come out of the water wet.
Is there also coasteering in the eastern Algarve?
At the moment there are no coasteering excursions east of Albufeira. This is because the impressive rock formations and cliffs in the eastern Algarve are not present.
