Tips for the West Coast of the Portuguese Algarve

The west coast of the Algarve , also known as the Costa Vicentina , is a beautiful part of Portugal that should not be missing from your to-go list during your holiday. In contrast to the coastline in the south, you will find fewer buildings here and a lot of rugged nature. In the summer, the west coast beaches are popular with surfers and sun worshippers, while during the stormy season in the autumn, huge waves splash against the rocks. In the spring, nature blooms and you can walk through seas of flowers and plants. A paradise for photographers.

Furthermore, you will encounter a lot less people on the west coast than on the south coast. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle during your holiday in the Algarve, then this is the place for you.

Since I live only half an hour’s drive from the west coast, I regularly get in the car to surf, walk or take pictures. On this page you will discover my tips for the west coast of the Algarve .

9 West Coast Algarve sights & tips

Below you will find my tips for sights and stops to visit while discovering the west coast of the Algarve. For each tip I give you will read some information, self-shot photos and of course a route description. If you leave early, you should be able to visit most places in one day. Have fun discovering the West Coast Algarve!

West Coast Algarve tips sights

This impressive old fortress is situated on a peninsula and used to keep watch over the nearby villages. On the walls you can still find old cannons and in the courtyard are the remains of the military accommodation.

Visit this beautiful lighthouse at the ‘end of the world’ around sunset for a romantic evening. Plus, you’ll find ‘the last bratwurst before America’ here.

Situated about 100 meters above the ocean, you will find a slightly creepy ruin as well as a beautiful view over Praia do Castelejo and Praia da Águia. The road is unpaved and can be bad, so don’t hesitate to park on the side of the road 300 meters before the end point and walk the last part. It is worth it.

The last 200 meters are off-road, but you will arrive at a beautiful viewpoint above Praia do Cordoama and Praia do Castelejo. When the wind is coming from the sea, paragliders regularly fly here, taking off along the cliffs via the air currents.

In the summer this wide sandy beach is popular with surfers of all levels. On the hill by the parking lot is a ‘snack bar’ with a view over the beach. You can also take a nice walk here on the wooden boardwalk.

West Coast Algarve tips sights

Drive to Praia do Amado and turn right past the parking lot to discover a beautiful stretch of coastline from your car. Stop at one of the many viewpoints and wooden walkways and look down from the high cliffs onto the water. Once past Praia do Bordeira you will end up back in Carrapateira.

One of my favorite beaches is Praia da Arrifana. Not only do you have a phenomenal view from the parking lot above, you can also surf here very well. Thanks to the cliffs on both sides, this beach is well sheltered from the wind. Disadvantage: as a non-resident you are not allowed to drive down, so a steep walk awaits you. 😉

This village is a nice stop for coffee or lunch. Walk in the center over the bridge and along the water, or zig-zag up to the castle ruins. In the ‘new’ part in the east you can find specialty coffee at  KOYO  and wine at  Madame! Wine shop .

It is like stepping back in time as you walk through the streets of this authentic Portuguese village. Stroll through the old town and along the river, then drive to Praia de Odeceixe for an afternoon of sun or surfing.

Affordable car rental in the Algarve

The best way to discover all the beauty in the Algarve is with a rental car. By renting a car for a few days you can much more easily reach the sights and activities that are not always accessible by public transport.

By renting a car from Luzcar, you are helping a local family business run by Portuguese entrepreneurs. This way you support the local economy and you also get top service, which is often a stark contrast to the large corporations. Luzcar is based in Lagos, but they also offer cars at the airport in Faro. This way you can pick up the car immediately upon arrival and return it at the airport upon departure.

Luzcar’s reputation speaks for itself. Almost 5 out of 5 on Google Maps.
