praia da luz Algarve Portugal

An hour’s drive from Faro airport is the charming town of Luz , also known as Praia da Luz . It is the neighboring village of authentic Lagos but is much smaller and quieter. This ocean-side village is an excellent destination if you want to stay somewhere where all restaurants, sights and activities are within walking distance.

Luz is located in the western part of the Algarve, just half an hour’s drive to the west coast, making it a perfect base to stay and explore the west coast from. Also for day trippers who roam the southern coast of the Algarve, Luz is a pleasant stop for a walk and a hot lunch overlooking the blue sea.

On the east side of Praia da Luz beach you will find the Rocha Negra rock formation situated on a colourful hill. On the west side the small boulevard has a number of excellent restaurants from where you can watch sunbathers, surfers or snorkellers while you work your way through a delicious Portuguese meal.

Discover everything about the town of Luz on this page, such as sights, hotel tips and my favorite restaurants. Luz is also the village where you can stay ‘with me’ in my brand new holiday home: Baleias Guesthouse!

📽 First, watch a short video below with my favorite self-shot shots of Luz.

Praia da Luz top 4 Sights

Although Luz is a small town, it has a few nice sights that are worth seeing. Park your car in one of the free parking lots and conquer Luz on foot. Don’t forget to stop at the Eis Factory for artisanal ice cream. Stay (or bake) on the beach until sunset and choose one of the lovely restaurants on the promenade for traditional or international culinary delights.

These are the top 4 sights in and around Luz:

1. The beach: Praia da Luz

Luz and Praia da Luz Algarve Portugal

The idyllic Praia da Luz is an 800-metre long beach that on one side slopes into a flat rock formation that runs into the water, while on the other side it is slowly swallowed up by impressive and colourful cliffs.

In summer the beach is popular with sun worshippers and offers banana boats, beach sunbed rentals and snorkelling, while the rest of the year the beach is used by the expat beach volleyball community and offers good surfing waves.

Directly behind the beach, the boulevard has a number of excellent restaurants where you absolutely must make a reservation in the summer, but where you can just walk in during the winter.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz. Sights in Praia da Luz

In the old center of Luz you will find the small but charming church of Nossa Senhora da Luz . If the doors are open, you are welcome to come inside and take a look at the colorful decoration.

When you leave the church, keep walking straight ahead until you come across the ice cream stand of Eis Factory , for a delicious artisanal ice cream.

3. From Kliffen: Black Rock

Rocha Negra in Praia da Luz, Algarve

Once you see it, you can guess why they call this mountain of rocks Rocha Negra (Black Rock). If it weren’t for this impressive rock formation, you could probably walk from Luz to Lagos at low tide. Now you can, but you’ll have to go up and down to make the walk between the two places.

From above, Rocha Negra is just as impressive as from below. In surf season, it is a popular surf spot for pros who tackle this right-hander (a 15-minute paddle from the beach). Walk east from Luz and you will find the hiking trail that takes you up this hill.

4. Luz Viewpoint

Miradouro da Luz - sights Praia da Luz Algarve

At the southwestern tip of the boulevard is the Miradouro da Luz , a pagoda with some benches on the tip of the cliffs. From here you look out over the boulevard, the beach and in the distance the Rocha Negra.

As soon as a western storm passes in the autumn, the waves splash on the rocks here in explosions of water. Directly behind this viewpoint lies the Fortaleza da Luz : a former fortress that now houses an excellent restaurant.

Praia da Luz top 3 activities

In Luz the range of activities is a lot smaller than in neighbouring Lagos, but that actually benefits the quiet atmosphere. Most activities here you will have to undertake on your own, such as mountain biking, walking or snorkelling.

These are the top 3 activities to do in Luz :

1.Rent an e-bike or mountain bike at Algarve Sportland

algarvesportland

At Algarve Sportland you can rent an E-bike or E-Mountain bike for a day (part) or multiple days. Since you are already outside the hustle and bustle of Lagos, you cycle out of the built-up area within a few minutes and are suddenly surrounded by meadows, hills and beaches.

The friendly Italian owner knows the nicest places to ride to with your rented two-wheeler.

Tip: Head southeast towards Burgau & Salema for a scenic drive with plenty of stops along the way to replenish your internal caffeine reservoir with a Pastel de Nata.

2. Hiking to the Vértice Geodésico da Atalaia & the Rocha Negra

Luz and Praia da Luz tips

From Luz, a walking trail leads up to the plateau overlooking the Rocha Negra . Your end point (or stopover if you continue to Lagos) is the Vértice Geodésico da Atalaia , a pillar that keeps watch over the village at the top of the hill.

The route is easy to walk and takes about half an hour from Luz. On a summer day, take a bottle of water with you because you quickly lose a lot of fluid, especially during the last steeper part.

3. Snorkeling or Surfing

Luz and Praia da Luz tips

In the summer you can snorkel nicely on the west side of Praia da Luz between the rocks and stones. Here you will find countless fish and with a bit of luck even octopuses. If you come with hold luggage, take a snorkel set from home and enjoy yourself without spending a cent!

Between November and April, the surf season is in full swing, transforming the clear blue water into waves that can reach between 30 and 130 centimeters high. Luz is a popular surf spot, especially around Rocha Negra, where the waves can even reach twice that height. From the viewpoint, you can watch the surfers brave the waves, or get up close and personal by paddling out with a surfboard yourself. If you want to take surf lessons, check out the surf camps page or the surf lessons page.

Accommodation tips for Praia da Luz

In the small Luz are a number of nice apartments and hotels from where you can discover the rest of the middle and west Algarve. Moreover, you have the beach and the boulevard within walking distance, so you can also leave the car for a day.

These are my hotel tips for Luz:

baleias guesthouses

In juni 2025 we will open the doors to our beautiful 3-bedroom holiday home: Baleias Guesthouse! Here you will find a private pool, fully equipped kitchen, sea views and a comfortable living room. Our guesthouse is most suitable for families and is only a short 10 minute walk to the beach. We look forward to welcoming you!

Luz Beach Apartments

You will hardly find any closer to the beach than these apartments! Luz Beach Apartments is located directly on the small boulevard of Praia da Luz . From two-person studios to apartments for up to 6 people, this place is the ideal destination for a sun holiday where you don’t want to walk much. In addition to facilities such as a small kitchen, you will also find beach chairs and parasols to take to the beach. Saves a few tens of euros per day on rent!

Luz Resort

Baia da Luz Resort is a beautiful four-star resort within walking distance of the center & beach. In the spacious apartments everything is available and if you don’t feel like salt water, you can float in the pool where sunbeds and parasols are available for you. For families or groups there are also three-bedroom apartments.

Luz Resort

The villas of Ocean Villas Luz are ideal for families with children, as most apartments have two bedrooms. The cozy accommodations have their own kitchen, living room and are equipped with all the amenities for a comfortable stay. The center and beach of Luz are a 3-minute walk away. The only point of attention is that the use of air conditioning costs extra.

Praia da Luz restaurant tips

I can be found in Luz on a regular basis to visit one of my highly rated restaurants for a dinner date or when family is visiting. With a diverse range of restaurant types (and price tags), you are spoiled for choice. Below you will find my recommendations for restaurants in Luz.

Restaurant nameReview
ZaZu Beach Cafe
Seafood, Steaks & Asian
ZaZu Beach Club is located on the boulevard, on top of restaurant Boaty’s, which gives you a beautiful view of the beach from almost every table. They serve an excellent Vitello Tonnato, which I often follow with a Tuna Steak. The homemade desserts such as the White Chocolate Cheesecake are also finger-licking good.

In high season you should book a few days in advance, especially for a table on the weekend.
Latitude – Wine & Tapas
Tapas restaurant
I can also be found here regularly for an evening of tapas and wine. Thanks to the changing menu, there are always new dishes to discover, but fortunately the excellent core selection remains the same. Tip: Order a bit of everything and share it with your entire group. If you assume 2 to 3 snacks per person, you will have just enough room for dessert!

My personal favorites: homemade gnocchi, Padron peppers, tuna tartare, the dried Pata Negro ham and/or the dried beef carpaccio.

I recommend making a reservation in advance, especially if you want to go on the weekend.
Pizza Real
Pizzaria
If you fancy a simple but richly filled pizza, you can go to Pizza Real. If my girlfriend and I don’t feel like cooking, we order by phone and the pizzas are ready fifteen minutes later. You can eat inside, but don’t expect the comfort of ZaZu or Latitude. That’s not a problem, though, because for 10 to 14 euros per pizza you’ll have a well-filled stomach. They also serve a number of pastas, which were very popular with family members of ours.
Boaty’s Tapas Cafe
Tapas restaurant
This small but cute tapas restaurant in the open air has a roof made of grapevines, so you sit under the leaves and bunches of grapes. If you are looking for good tapas for lunch or breakfast, this restaurant is an excellent choice. The tuna tartare with avocado is so delicious that it is often
survival of the fastest when my girlfriend is with me. The carpaccio and Caesar salad are also recommended.

Affordable car rental in the Algarve

The best way to discover all the beauty in the Algarve is with a rental car. By renting a car for a few days you can much more easily reach the sights and activities that are not always accessible by public transport.

By renting a car from Luzcar, you are helping a local family business run by Portuguese entrepreneurs. This way you support the local economy and you also get top service, which is often a stark contrast to the large corporations. Luzcar is based in Lagos, but they also offer cars at the airport in Faro. This way you can pick up the car immediately upon arrival and return it at the airport upon departure.

Luzcar’s reputation speaks for itself. Almost 5 out of 5 on Google Maps.

Parking in Praia da Luz

Luz can get busy quickly because the small village doesn’t have a lot of parking spaces. Luckily, as a local living nearby, I can tell you exactly where to park!
