Algarve with children – 5 beach tips
The Algarve is known for its beautiful beaches and is a great destination for families. The southern coast of the Algarve has an abundance of safe and child-friendly beaches, with lifeguards keeping an eye on them during the high season. The sea on the southern coast is generally calm, making it safe for children to play and swim, unlike the west coast, where the sea can sometimes be rougher.
Here are five examples of quiet and uncluttered beaches on the southern coast of the Algarve, perfect for families:
- Praia da Rocha, Portimão : This beach is one of the most famous and visited beaches in the Algarve. During the high season you can find lifeguards here who keep an eye on the beachgoers. Read more about Portimão here.
- Praia da Oura, Albufeira : This beach is popular with tourists and locals alike. It has lifeguards who ensure the safety of swimmers during the high season. Read more about Albufeira here.
- Praia de Vilamoura, Vilamoura : This beach in the popular resort of Vilamoura usually has lifeguards in high season to ensure the safety of beach-goers. Read more about Vilamoura here.
- Praia de Tavira, Tavira : Located in the charming town of Tavira, this beach is a favourite with families. During high season, there are lifeguards on duty to keep an eye on things. Read more about Tavira here.
- Praia da Luz, Luz : In the west of the Algarve lies the quiet village of Luz just next to Lagos. Here too, in high season, a number of lifeguards keep an eye on the swimmers. Read more about Praia da luz here.

Algarve with children – what to look out for?
- ☀ Don’t underestimate the sun, put sunscreen on the kids: The sun in the Algarve is very strong, so it is important to put sunscreen on the kids with a high SPF. Also make sure they wear protective clothing, such as a hat and a long-sleeved shirt, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
- 🩲 Keep an eye on children when swimming: Although the beaches in the Algarve are beautiful, it is important to keep a close eye on children when they go swimming. Some beaches can have strong currents, especially the exposed beaches. Make sure that children are supervised at all times and that they are informed about the potential dangers of the sea. Swimming pools are not always gated like in many other countries, never leave your children unattended by the pool
- 🚙 Be careful when exploring smaller towns: In the smaller towns of the Algarve there are often few footpaths. Therefore be careful when walking along the road, especially with children. Make sure they stay close to you and pay extra attention to traffic.
- 🌄 Explore rocky areas and cliffs with caution: The Algarve is known for its beautiful rocky areas and cliffs. If you want to explore these areas, be extra careful, especially with children. Make sure they wear sturdy shoes and stay on the designated paths to avoid accidents. Every now and then, a piece of rock will crumble, as it is only sandstone. So never walk too close to the edge of the cliffs.
- 💧 Stay hydrated: The Algarve can get very hot during the summer months, so it is essential to ensure that children stay hydrated. Make sure they drink water regularly and avoid too much exposure to the heat during the hottest hours of the day. Also, always take plenty of water with you when you go out.
