The Algarve has numerous vineyards where excellent Portuguese wine is produced. Many of these are open to visitors and are gratefully used by many holidaymakers during a guided tour and wine tasting. But did you know that there is another kind of ‘yard’ to visit, which you might not think of so quickly? The Algarve is known for its excellent olive oil, in addition to wine. At the olive grove of Monterosa, you can visit to learn how typical Algarve olive oil is made!

💡 Olive tip: In Tavira you can visit an olive factory and try various local olive varieties in combination with a small guided tour.

Just a 45 minute drive from Albufeira or half an hour from Faro, you will find the Monterosa olive grove. Here they produce a number of excellent types of olive oil on 15 hectares of land that compliment the dishes while cooking. The olives are still picked by hand, but they use modern techniques and machinery to produce six different types of olive oil with great care and attention.

Not only locally, but also internationally, Monterosa olive oil is well regarded. In various international olive oil competitions, including those in New York, Japan and France, they have already won prizes several times.

The nice thing about the Monterosa olive grove is that they offer guided tours where you learn all about the process of making olive oil for an hour and a half, followed by an olive oil tasting of course. Unlike a wine tasting, you don’t have to argue about who’s the designated driver!

Tickets for the tour plus tasting are at the time of writing €13.00 for adults and €7.00 for children. For groups of more than 4 people, a visit can be scheduled upon request.

Of course there is also a small shop where you can buy bottles of olive oil. Most bottles of Extra Virgin of 500ml are €21.00 at the time of writing.
